Speech and Language Therapy
Social skills instruction is multi-faceted at Promise; it is strategically targeted with direct training activities and is intentionally incorporated throughout each student’s day. Beginning in the 2013-14 school year, Promise implemented an innovative social skills program called “Superflex… A Superhero Social Thinking Curriculum” created by Stephanie Madrigal and Michelle Garcia Winner. The entire Promise staff looks for “teachable moments” throughout the school day to facilitate social and behavioral development in each student.
The objective of this class is to immerse students in language and to improve social awareness in the context of community. The therapists utilize children’s literature as a foundation for language improvement. Each lesson is rich in vocabulary that is relevant to that day’s featured story. Instruction from various content areas, such as science, math, art, music, etc. is woven into the activity enhancing the fun, curiosity and adventure of learning. Receptive and expressive language skills are addressed throughout each session. Hands-on activities are incorporated to make each topic focus more concrete.
